In the 1950s researchers of Cornell University came up with the model of the triangular kitchen. Their goal was to figure out a layout, which significantly reduces the distance we have to walk in our kitchen, while we make our food or clean up. The key to this layout is the placement of the fridge, the sink and the stove. The workplaces are between the angles of the triangle. We can understand the logic behind it if we think about the food preparation process from the storing, washing, cleaning, cutting, cooking and serving all the way to the dishwashing and cleaning.
The triangular model in the kitchen
The L-shaped kitchen : In this, the classic kitchen triangle is ideal, and we only need 2 adjacent walls for the renovation, it is also works with medium sized kitchens. It’s a good choice if the kitchen is open to other rooms, where it is possible to set up a dining or a living room or you can make a perfect area for a family room.
Kitchen designers agree that the most effective layout is the U-shaped kitchen for cooking. This form can be shorter or longer, so it is sometimes referred to as ”C-shaped kitchen". In this shape, the counters are placed along 3 adjacent walls, the creation of the ideal work-triangle is simple. If the space is too wide, we can add a kitchen island to bring the elements closer together to increase efficiency.
If we can only place the furniture along 1 wall, then we can use the linear kitchen layout. But for this we need a minimum of 3 meters of space. It is not the best solution, because in this case we can't talk about work-triangles. All the elements are placed in a straight line.
In many aspects, the most ideal layout is the corridor kitchen, because then the sides of the triangle are shortened, so we have to walk less, thus we are less likely to get tired. The disadvantage of this kitchen layout design is that only one person can move comfortably.
The 2 remaining layout is not too suitable for social gatherings. If the kitchen is the center of your home and is your socializing area, then the best layout is the one with an island. It has 2 important roles: space separation and connection. It can be an operational unit as well, incorporating the sink and the cooktop. With this shape you usually need a large kitchen but can work with medium sized kitchens too, so we should aim to make a small work-triangle, if possible.
For smaller gatherings the G-shaped kitchen is ideal, which combines the U-shaped kitchen layout with a smaller dining space.
With the right layout we can establish 2 totally separated workspaces.
Both kitchen layouts could be practical for extra surface and storage.
